Classic Grumman Scanoe Aluminum boat 15’ Sport Boat with trailer Sailing Canoe Here’s a beautiful, versatile classic aluminum boat, a 15’ – 4” long “S’canoe”. It’s about 43” wide at the widest part (at the midships oarlocks). It’s the perfect sport boat, suitable for cruising around, fishing, hunting, camping. I believe this one was made in 1955, and it needs repainted and some TLC to make it lovely again, but meanwhile, last time I used it, it floated without any leaks and functioned perfectly. You could fish with it this summer, and have a fun project refurbishing it next winter.
The aluminum and rivets look fine, not rotted, so it must have been stored inside. Since I bought it in 2008, it’s been outside. Paint needs scraping and repainting but the boat is actually in remarkably good shape. You can paddle it like a canoe, but it also can be rowed. It has four oarlock fittings that take standard oarlocks (galvanized or bronze, easily available at boating stores).
I do not have oars, oarlocks, or paddles to go with it. It has a transom reinforced to take a small gas or electric engine. And it can be sailed. It still has the mast step and wooden thwart to step the mast, but I’m sorry to say I no longer have the rudder, side boards, sail or mast. The wood thwart should be replaced, an easy project.
I do have a gas can, funnel, and a plastic battery box the new owner can have for free. Check out Bing Images for “Grumman Sailing Canoe”, “Parts”, etc. If you’re somewhat handy, you should be able to make all the sailing components required. Another accessory easy to make would be outrigger floats, possibly useful for small kids. This one came out of a bankrupt summer camp in the Catskills.
If I’m reading the labels correctly, it was made in 1955, by the Metal Boat Company Inc division of Grumman Aircraft Corp, Inc, of Marathon, LI, New York. Famous for their WWII aircraft, Grumman turned to manufacturing amphibious planes, motorboats, and canoes after the war. Top quality craftsmanship. This S’canoe is the ancestor of all the recent Grumman “Sportboats”, with basically the same features. The design was based on “"Grand Lakers," wooden fishing guide boats built on Grand Lake, Maine for oar power, subsequently modified for the advent of small outboard engines with the addition of more bearing aft and a flat tumblehome transom.” – Wikipedia.
It has floatation foam in the bow and under the stern seat, similar as other Grumman canoes. These are accessible with machine screws, so you can replace the foam when you wish. The remainder of the construction is mostly riveted, and the rivets still look fine and secure, and as I say, no leaks last time I used the boat. I will also include a brand new drain plug to mount on the transom. I bought the 2000# capacity, 16-foot Karavan trailer new to use with this boat.
The trailer is included in this sale. Looks to have a 2” ball hitch, but it might be smaller – I no longer have the vehicle I towed it with. I’m radically downsizing, which is why this boat and trailer are up for sale. Pick-up only. In North Smithfield, RI, near Woonsocket in northern RI.
Whoever comes to pick up the boat might want to bring two new web straps or ropes to secure the boat to the trailer, a red flag to tie to the transom of the boat, and maybe spare bulbs for the taillights. All the wiring on the trailer looks OK, but I have no way of testing the brake lights. Also bring a tire inflator. I think the tires are OK, but they might want a bit of air. There is a spare tire attached to the trailer that has never been used, see photos. Questions?
I’ll be away June 2 – 5, but otherwise will try to answer any question I can. Pick-up only, which can be arranged for any day or evening of the week.
