Up for sale is a very nice GRUMMAN 18' STANDARD DOUBLE-END ALUMINUM CANOE. Hull identification number shows it was made in January of 1979. As someone who has paddled many of these and other canoes, I will say an 18-foot Grumman is better than the much more common 17-footer for several reasons. Primarily, more room for people, gear, coolers, dogs and whatnot and second, much better tracking and grace on the water, more stable and will handle bigger water as well. Great for fishin' or birdie watching.
Basically, just more utility. This one is special due to condition. Pay attention to the 'Grumman odometer' photos of the floor in front of the two seats, hardly used. A more heavily used canoe will have the gritty non-slip flooring paint worn down to bare aluminum quick. This one is like new (with some honest wear or course) and not half bad for a 43-year-old boat and it will go another 43 easily without issue. Also, in Grumman aluminum canoes (which BTW revolutionized the canoe industry) the name Grumman is the gold-standard and only name that is (all the rest are copy cats).
The Grumman Canoe is a direct descendent of the WW2 aircraft the company is famous for. They began manufacturing these right after the war in New York. Note the rivets in the photos and how these are put together, bombproof, just like aircraft. Many imitators but none equal and much better resale to boot.BTW easy to paddle solo as well as double, just sit in the bow seat facing backwards, no problem with double-end canoe and you will be better balanced out. Can't do this so well in the tractor seats common in many canoes.
BTW, this canoe has the two factory bow and stern tie down fittings on canoe perfectly intact, on a roughly used Grumman these will be long missing or damaged. If you could get a new one of these (and you can't) you would pay triple the cost of this boat easily and shipping would be off the charts. Own this boat and treat it right and you can sell it for what you paid or likely more in a decade or two or three and it will just as good as it is now as well. Also, a word on why aluminum canoes can be better than the common plastic ones. Durability, for one and ease of storing for two. These do well stored outside, upside down on a couple sawhorses year-round with no real issues other than perhaps a bit of sun-fading of the decals, do not try that with a plastic boat. This boat has been stored inside in a commercial storage facility since I have owned it, however.
It is clean and ready to hit the water with a few cold ones in the cooler. Can be delivered reasonable distance for a fee. From hull decal: Max. HP 5, Max person capacity 765 lbs., Max total capacity 845 lbs. Yeah, she is a bit heavy, but about same as similar sized plastic boat, you will forget that quick when she is on the water.
Reality is, you will not find a better canoe anywhere for the money. Wenonah kevlars are nice and super-light but will cost you a small fortune (four or five times the cost of this boat), will not last near as long, can't be stored outside year-round and you better tie them up on shore, they can blow away in a good gust of wind. I have camped under these Grummans, works quite well and solid as a rock. Usually, will not blow away and if it does you are in a tornado, forget the boat and seek shelter! The reality is in 2022 stuff like this is just not going to be available anymore due primarily to shipping costs.
Enjoy 'em while they last. I am only considering selling this canoe as we are moving and have to vacate three storages and have a bunch of other kayaks etc. To deal with as well! I like quality stuff. Google 'quality stuff' and you may see a photo of one of these.
You will see a lot more of these in places like northern Minnesota and Wisconsin or Adirondacks for example (made in Marathon, New York). Much rarer in West, again due to shipping. Just shipping these from east to west might cost you more than I am asking here (actually have little idea...my advice is if interested, do some checking around, some truckers would be very happy to carry one of these heading back east in a less than full load). No license/hull numbers, not required in Nevada and no pollution or oil slicks or really any maintenance. Just good exercise, fun, peace and quiet tranquility.
One last thing. If you are thinking of getting into paddling/canoes, just do yourself a big favor and DO IT NOW. Some things in life one can overthink and over analyze. GOD DOES NOT DEDUCT FROM A PERSON'S LIFE THE TIME SPEND CANOEING IS MY MANTRA (got that one from my sailing brothers). Located in sunny Reno, Nevada just off I-80 in commercial storage facility.
Free pick-up of course. If you are within say a hundred miles of Reno or so, can be delivered for a fee. Would be happy to deliver to any shipping company in Reno free as well, but you would have to work out all details. See my feedback, I pay attention to details and do things right. My descriptions are accurate.
If you are not a reliable bidder, please do us both a favor and just move on. Canoe is listed on another platform locally, so if you interested, place bid so it stays on this platform, once it has a bid here it stays here for duration. Wow! In all my years of classifieds board (perhaps 20+), I have never seen an item with so many views and watchers and zero bidders...listen watchers, if you don't want to pick-up canoe you CAN ship it. I will deliver to whatever shipping outfit in Reno you would like FREE or canoe is just off I-80 in Reno and be happy to help load on a truck going by with room...done it before, OR I will deliver within a reasonable distance of Reno for basically price of gas as mentioned above. YOU just have to do your leg work and research and, alas everything in life of value has a cost.
There is also a best offer option here.
