Manufactured by the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, this vintage 17' square stern canoe is from Grumman's best years of production of aluminum canoes at the Marathon, N.Y. Facility in the years just after 1952. Manufacturer: Grumman Aircraft Engineering CorporationSize: 17' Style: Square Stern Material: 100% Aircraft grade aluminum, with some stainless steelLocation of manufacture: Marathon, N.Y. After 1952Serial # 2042 GP S417 Circa: 1952 – 1962, definitely before 1972.Equipped with factory mounts for sail kit. Includes factory produced hardware kit for pontoons - for extra stability for gasoline motor or sailing.

With the flat bottom, it is actually somewhat difficult to tip over.•Has three major thwarts (bar from one side to the other), with a little 4th near the stern. The strength of the body of the canoe is such that it can be placed on the top of a vehicle and both ends heavily tied down to the respective ends of the car for transport on long, rough road trips. Once I transported it on a really rough logging roads in Canada.•There is a bow seat, with the rear seat being the top of a flat surface covering an air lock. The bow has an air lock inside the pointed bow.
Even when full of water, this canoe floats.•The canoe is 13 inches deep and 36 inches wide at the center thwart. Accommodates 3 adults with minor supplies, or two people with copious supplies.•The “square” stern is 9.75 in. Wide (outside) and has been used to support a small gasoline boat motor. As a flat bottom canoe, it really flies, but the weight of the gasoline motor on one end is quite noticeable. A battery operated trolling motor is quite appropriate, no noticeable weight, and works well.
My preference is just paddles as the canoe is not difficult to manage. If going to cross a very large lake, like in Canada, a trolling motor would save some paddling. Likewise, if fighting a heavy wind, a trolling motor would be beneficial. I have a trolling motor available.•See diagram: Points A to B = 31 in.; B to C = 28 in.; C to D = 13 in.; D to E 36 in.; E to F = 36 in.; F to G = 26 in.; G to H = 24 in.; H to I =10 in.•The picture showing the canoe is a diagrams depicting exactly how the canoe actually looks. It is all one color, aluminum, with removable black vinyl registration numbers on both sides of the bow.
There is no piece of wood on the square stern, but there are holes for placing one. This is an easy addition if one wants to mount a motor and I'll do it free if the buyer wants..•There are small aluminum water deflector strips on each side from the bow at about water level to deflect water at high speeds or under rough conditions. This canoe offers the flexibility to paddles, sail or motor, and has been manufactured with quality materials to provide outstanding service for many lifetimes. No dents, some scratches (has been used) and has no repairs or patches. Non-slip paint on inside bottom has some worn spots.
The buyer will have the money saving benefits of many free accessories (seats, paddles, etc.). This is a high quality item that has, and can be, used on lakes, rivers, and wherever there is water. .Local pickup (Indiana) or FOB, buyer arranges for shipping and assumes all shipping costs. May arrange contact to discuss delivery before buying.
