Flush metal batten wood canoe built by the Lakefield Canoe Co. In Lakefield, Ontario. A fairly uncommon canoe. This one was built with 8 wide planks, 4 per side, with a brass batten rabbeted into the inside edge of each plank. It's an amazing display of craftsmanship.
More so than the rib and batten or the longitudinal strip canoes of the same time period. Judging by the tag this one most likely dates circa 1915, +/- four years. There is fiberglass on the outside. The entire hull is not covered with it. The fiberglass is mostly along the planking joints.
It was applied long ago and over varnish so it should, and it appears that it will, come of with ease and with little to no damage. The hull is nice and fair and the planking is generally okay. There are some splits along the grain here and there, but nothing across the grain and no punctured holes. By the time all is said and done you'll probably discover that most of the ribs should be replaced. Comes with original floor boards, a pair of paddles, and a double bladed paddle.
Overall it's going to need some work to bring it back to a usable state. It's certainly doable and probably worth it in the long run. Restore it or leave it as is for academic or display purposes.
