18' E. M. White by Island Falls Canoe Maine Guide Wood Canvas Sailing Canoe JerryStelmok Island Falls Canoe In 1988 Jerry built this 18 foot, wood and canvas, guide canoe on an E. M. White mold. Now, 28 years later, after many wonderful camping trips, the canoe is gathering dust because my wife and I, now 76 and 80 years old, can no longer cope with lifting it for transport from its hanging straps in our garage to car top for transport to water. It remains in excellent condition.

Decades ago a local canoe restorer, Jon Sairs, custom built a sail for the boat, also still in excellent condition. (The sail is not practical when camping, but fun for sailing.) - an old snapshot of the canoe with sail ready for boarding in Lake Champlain - an old photo of a photo of the boat on the shore in the Manicouagan Reservoir - a digital picture yesterday showing the rudder, leeboards, and leeboard support in our backyard - a digital photo yesterday of the interior showing the excellent condition of this boat. The 18'6" Guide has proven itself a near perfect traveling canoe for about a century. It has a slight arch across the bottom, rocker, narrow entries and a classic sheerline that looks great and keeps the rough water out.
