This canoe is perfect for serious wilderness expeditions. The canoe is extremely durable, yet packs into a duffel bag that is 18" Diameter by 48" long and completely packed is roughly 52 lbs. If you are looking for a canoe to fly into a remote location these Ally canoes can't be beaten. If you just need a canoe that packs up extremely small such that you can store it in your RV, camper, car, apartment, dorm room, etc., then this too will be a great choice for you. This canoe was manufactured in YR2002.
I purchased it from the original owner earlier this year and used the canoe for a 12 day trip down a remote interior Alaska river. The canoe performed well and the seats are actually much more comfortable than the new Ally canoe that our group also purchased for this trip. The canoe absolutely does not leak; there are no holes or repairs to the skin of the canoe. There are several areas around the gunnels where the the skin shows abrasion wear, but this has zero impact on the performance of the canoe. This wear was present when I purchased the canoe and I had no concern using this canoe for our extreme wilderness trip where we were hundreds of miles from the nearest village.
Ally canoes are manufactured in Norway and there are no distributors anywhere in the United States; finding an Ally canoe in the used market is extremely difficult. Known issues with the canoe:The seats are integrated into the canoe cross members. The joint where the cross members attach to the gunnel has two "o-rings" that lock the proper position for the cross member. One of these o-rings failed during our trip on day #5 of 12. This allowed the seat to move rearward.
I disassembled the canoe, then used gorilla tape to lock the o-ring back into the proper position. Inspection of the other o-ring joints showed that several had wear or cracks forming. I proactively used gorilla tape on all of these connections. This field repair worked great; we had zero issues with the seats for the remainder of our 12 day trip. I ordered replacement OEM o-rings from Bergans in Norway (manufacturer of the ALLY canoe).
I will forward these parts to the buyer if he canoe sells before the replacement parts arrive. There is some slight abrasion around the gunnel in several areas where the canoe rubbed against something (down tree, dock, etc.). Notes:A repair kit is included with the sale. The kit includes a rubber mallet that is essential for assembly of the canoe. An extra seat is included with this canoe. I used the canoe only as a tandem (1 bow paddler, 1 stern paddler), but it is possible to install the extra seat and use this canoe for three people. The green duffel bag was purchased separately (it was not supplied with the new canoe). It's in rough shape, but holds the canoe just fine. The foam rubber floor provides floatation.
There is nothing that needs to be inflated on this canoe. This is a specific feature of the Ally designs that makes them superior to others. When you are fishing a remote river for 12 days, you don't want to worry about a stray hooking popping your inflatable boat! The canoe will be shipped in a box with dimensions 18" X 18" X 44". Approximate shipping weight will be 70 lbs.I have a 2nd Ally Canoe listed on classifieds board for sale.
The 2nd canoe was brand new prior to our Alaska trip this past July. After using both canoes for our Alaska trip, I much prefer this 2002 canoe over the newer Ally design. If I were to keep only one of the two canoes, it would be this one. Basic Specifications:Length = 16.5 feetWidth = 37.5"Weight Capacity = 835 lbs (picture included in sale shows canoe loaded to 600 lbs..... handled great)
