This canoe is perfect for serious wilderness expeditions. The canoe is extremely durable, yet packs into a duffel bag that is 18" Diameter by 48" long and completely packed is roughly 52 lbs. If you are looking for a canoe to fly into a remote location these Ally canoes can't be beaten. If you just need a canoe that packs up extremely small such that you can store it in your RV, camper, car, apartment, dorm room, etc., then this too will be a great choice for you. This canoe was manufactured in YR2013, but had never been used prior to it's maiden voyage this July for a 12 day trip down a remote Alaskan river.
In 12 days of floating this river, we never saw a single rock; there was nothing but mud everywhere. Not only did this make for fantastic pike fishing, but it also meant that the canoe has never touched a rock in it's life; the skin is in perfect condition. Ally canoes are manufactured in Norway and there are no distributors anywhere in the United States; finding an Ally canoe in the used market is extremely difficult. Only known issues with the canoe:1.) There are 4 tears in the black foam rubber insulation pad. I did this while learning how to assemble the canoe in Ohio.
Assembly of an Ally is quite challenging the first time it is attempted. I put a piece of silver duct tape over each of the tears to prevent any further damage. This has zero impact on the function of the canoe. The tears are only in the top layer of the pad and do not extend through the pad. You can see the duct tape in the pictures.
The taped held-up fine for our 12 day adventure to Alaska.2.) There are a couple of small puncture marks in the pad from the poles. These too are only superficial and do not extend through the pad. See the attached pictures. Notes:1. The original OEM repair kit is included. All of this is new and has not been used.2.
The black duffel bag was purchased separately (it was not supplied with the new canoe)3. The foam rubber floor provides floatation. There is nothing that needs to be inflated on this canoe. This is a specific feature of the Ally designs that makes them superior to others. When you are fishing a remote river for 12 days, you don't want to worry about a stray hooking popping your inflatable boat!
4. The canoe will be shipped in a box with dimensions 17" X 17" X 43". Approximate shipping weight will be 70 lbs.
