Our Canoe CourseIt may sound a little daunting but building a boat is a very interesting, rewarding and enjoyable project. In just 3 or 4 days you could build your own canoe using our workshop, our tools and benefit from our many years experience in small boat building and repairs. It is easier these days too, with the materials available to the DIY builder meaning there are no complicated woodworking joints to deal with, it is all quite straightforward. We try to make it as easy as possible and you don't even need to be good at DIY. As well as offering various designs and sizes of canoe, we can also offer dates and times to suit you.* This auction/Listing is for our most popular canoe design, the Peasemarsh Open Canoe as shown in the pictures.
It is a lightweight canoe that is quite stable and tracks well. It is built with fore and aft decks under which you can fit inflatable buoyancy bags. There is an option for solid bulkheads with hatches under the decks which provides solid chambers for storage as well as buoyancy but these can leak over time so inflatable buoyancy is the recommended option. If there is time on your course, you may build a paddle too at no extra cost (you will get one anyway whether you make it or not). Extra days may be added for painting your canoe at our workshop.
You could build a canoe for the kids and one for yourself with our size range - 10' (3.05m), 12' (3.81m), 14' (4.4m) and 16' (4.72m). Our Dinghy Building Course If you would rather build a little dinghy instead of a canoe, try our Dinghy Building Course. We are currently basing the dinghy course around our Rye Bay design but, as with our canoes, other designs from our portfolio are possible. The Rye Bay 228 design is as simple to build as a canoe and takes just as long! You will get to build the hull, fit the frame, thwarts and trim as in the one on the left below, then take it home to finish it. The "RYE BAY 228" is the Mk IV version of this design as a stitch & tape boat.
It is 7' - 6" long with a good 4' beam which makes for a small but spacious boat with an approximate dry weight of 50lbs (22kg). It is built in 6mm ply or can be 6mm on the bottom and 4mm sides for a light duty, light weight boat. This has been a popular design and was the first of my designs we sold as a complete boat. It has had many uses - as a tender, a work boat, a fishing boat and as a sailing dinghy. It can take a small outboard motor - 2hp petrol or electric - and has optional built in buoyancy tanks. .This is my favourite S&T dinghy and I have built more of these than any of my other designs.
It started out as a fully framed, plywood planked boat I designed for me to sail round my local harbour and now, with the fourth re-deisign, it is possible to build the hull with just two sheets of plywood ready for the timber seats and trim.Over 4 days, you could build this dinghy ready to prepare for paint and/or varnish. When you take it home it will be watertight and ready for you to finish it. The course days schedule is similar to the canoes but takes a minimum of 4 days. Accommodation is not provided and you will need to bring your own food each day. There is hotel accommodation nearby with caravan and camping sites in the surrounding area.
