Canoe Building Holiday For Families Or Groups

Celebrate with a canoe building holiday! Every year we offer a few people the opportunity to come and stay in one of our home made cabins and build a canoe under our experienced guidance. The price shown is the full price for a family or group of friends (or on your own if you wish) and spend a week building your canoe. You will launch it here before taking it proudly home on the roof of your car or van. The canoe you will build will probably be a Birchcanoes Lakota.

There are a couple of other options both larger and smaller, but the Lakota is by far and away our most popular boat. It is versatile (can take a small family and can easily be paddled and carried solo). You will start your holiday by settling in to your cabin on the Sunday afternoon of your arrival. The cabins are self catering, and all have woodburning stoves. Next you will have a paddle on the river to let you try our canoes first hand so you know what you are building.

On the Monday you will start the hard work of sawing out all the marine ply panels you will need. You will sew these together loosely with cable ties so by the end of your first day you will have a first glimpse of your canoe. By the end of Tuesday you will have fitted ash gunwales, reclaimed mahogany decks, spruce seats and maybe an oak yoke. Next comes the application of resin and glassfibre tape. A lot of planing and sanding is needed to get the outside of your canoe ready for resin and tape.

Generally by Thursday your canoe will be ready for launch. You will be able to paddle your canoe on our river for the remainder of the week before taking your canoe proudly home. You now might have time to make yourselves paddles. These are extra cost, so you might prefer to buy your own.. Departure is normally Saturday. Whilst here you can enjoy lovely local walks to country pubs serving delicious meals, or you might like to visit the National Space Centre or the Golden Mile in Leicester, Bradgate Park, Rutland Water, Burrough on the Hill.

Here we have about an acre of fairly level ground for camping, camper vans or ball games. We keep chickens and have a friendly goat. We also have a tree house you might like to venture up into.. The price is £1000, but you may wish to pay £200 deposit on booking, the balance being payable 30 days prior to arrival. The deposit is fully returnable until 30 days prior to arrival.
