As Per: Silent Glide Canoe and Kayak Shop (New, old stock Reg $2,249.00)(information received from the internet) Specifications for The We-no-nah Fisherman MANUFACTURER MODEL WEIGHT LENGTH WIDTH DEPTH (center) STOCK COLOR Wenonah Canoes Fisherman 57 14ft. 0in. 39.00in. 14.00 Green The Fisherman is designed for families and sportsmen, the Fisherman is a stable platform for outdoor enjoyment. Short and wide, the Fisherman delivers easy turning and lots of initial stability. Its relatively flat bottom is very steady on fair waters, and its broad beam draws just inches.
The easy control and shallow draught gives access to areas that would be difficult for other craft, even many other canoes. Being that it is a stable, small hull, the Fisherman is an ideal choice for camps or at a lake cabin where kids will often use it. Since youngsters are light, they find it to be a fine paddling canoe that's also safe on waves due to its depth. Adults, however, like the Fisherman for wildlife viewing, star-gazing, or other uses that do not include big waves, heavy loads, or long travel. It's often used by one or two people for hunting or fishing.
(If you go alone, a good way is to sit in the bow seat facing the stern. This puts you closer to the center of the canoe. It also may help to place tackle or other gear ahead of you to achieve proper trim.) Available in Kevlar Ultra-light construction at a featherlight 36 lb., we also offer the Fisherman built from ultra-durable Royalex at 57 lb. While the Fisherman isn't meant for serious whitewater requiring ultimate impact resistance, the Royalex version can be a wise choice to travel shallow, rocky streams. Designed for stability not speed, the Fisherman still outperforms any other 14' canoe, and delivers this performance even though it has exceptional maneuvering.
I paddled a fisherman along side others in longer canoes, and at normal paddling speeds I was surprised at how easily I kept up. Canoes are available in several kinds of materials and with different construction methods: Royalex is a very tough and durable but still a reasonably light weight plastic laminate. A 17 foot Royalex canoe will weigh about 64 pounds compared to 75-85 pounds for other plastic or aluminum. Composite materials include Tufweave, a fiberglass and polyester hybrid that outperforms ordinary fiberglass types S or E. Kevlar is a an extremely tough material that is also very light weight.
Graphite is even lighter than kevlar but not as abrasion resistant. Flexcore construction uses several layers of either Tufweave or Kevlar with a specially designed hull reinforcement in the bottom of the canoe. This reinforcement is designed to be quite stiff to retain the design shape but able to flex rather than break on obstacles. This is a very tough construction method but not as tough as Royalex. It's advantages are lighter weight and better performance.
It is easily repaired if you manage to damage it. Ultra light construction uses fewer layers of specially reinforced Tufweave, kevlar and or graphite to build the lightest canoe that is still practical for everyday use in reasonably demanding conditions. It usually does not have a color applied to the hull unless you ask for it. The gel coat (color) adds about 5 pounds to the canoe. This is the stiffest construction method, resulting in the best performance.
It is not a good choice for a steady diet of hitting rocks and gravel unless light weight is a very high priority for you. It is especially good for lake and large river trips where carrying the canoe is over portage routes is necessary. Some smaller people and those with less upper body strength appreciate the light weight in all circumstances. It is reasonably easy to repair in most cases.
