ORCA Canoe Building Workshops 28th April -1st May 2017 We have 2 spaces available on our 28th April 2017 canoe building course in the Northern Lake District. Auction winners automatically gain a place on the course listed. You shall receive full course details following payment. The courses are relaxed and informal, and you work at your own station with full use of our tools and materials. All courses start at 9 am, finish 4 pm and normal all done by midday on the last day and the canoe is yours to take home and paddle.

MORE DATES can be found on our web site, google (orca canoe building) Your courseOver 4 days, you will build your own ‘Lakelander’ canoe. This is a simple to build canoe from 'Open River Canoe Adventures' and has evolved through many canoe building projects over the past 20 years. Your Canoe The 'Lakelander' is 15' long by 33''.
She has graceful lines, is very stable with a good load carrying capacity and a confident‘sea-worthiness’. Your canoe can be lifted and carried by one person (24kgs) and is easily transported on the roof of a car. For longevity, you will be using canoe - grade plywood, with ash gunwales, thwarts and seats. All seams will be reinforced with marine epoxy resin and fibre-glass tape. The canoe allows plenty of space for kit stowage, dogs, kids, picnic hampers etc.. Prior canoe building and woodworking experience... The canoes are designed to be built by complete novices.
The stages of construction are very straightforward and progressive and you will be shown in detail exactly 'how to'. Apart from an electric drill, no power tools are used.Staff Steve and Dan have built countless canoes all over the world... take a look at some of our videos on youtube.... 'Canoe building course lake district' / 'Building an ORCA canoe in 90 seconds' We will be on hand to help with the stages of your build, but pleas remember it is your canoe to build. Many hands make light work, and as such, you are welcome to bring along friends or family to assist, just let us know beforehand.Completion Yes, you can take your finished canoe home upon completion. Don't forget your roof bars, and either some good quality rope, or roof straps. Look to 'Thule' for good quality straps.
Loads of lakes, rivers and tarns for your maiden paddling trip. Food This is a self-catering course, so please bring some daytime snacks. We have tea and coffee a plenty, so no need to bring flasks etc..You will need a mug! Location This workshop is held in the North Lakes, near to Penrith. This area has plenty of cheap camp sites, B&B's and hotels.Surprise Gift Card Give a canoe build as a present!

Storing your canoe If you are short on space, you can store your boat outside in your garden, underneath a tarp. Just ensure it's at least a foot off the ground, away from the damp.. trestles work well, or you can fabricate a simple frame to stand it on.About usORCA is run by Steve and Dan and we have been building canoes for the last 15 years.
