Offered in this auction: Very Nice Vintage Wooden Folding Canoe Chair Vermont Tubbs Sno-Shu Chair ~1950s-60s. This is a vintage wooden canoe chair hand made by Vermont Tubbs, Inc. Of Wallingford, VT. Vermont Tubbs was one of the oldest U.S. Snowshoe makers, offering a full line of hand-made wood snowshoes and related sporting equipment based upon traditional Native American design.
They manufactured in Wallingford from the 1930s to the early-1970s. (Final pic is from a 1967 article in Vermont Life magazine on the company, I can include a photocopy of the article if you'd like). This Sno-Shu folding canoe chair features a wood frame (likely white ash) with rawhide webbing (water buffalo hide or cowhide was the preferred material). Both the frame and the webbing are in very nice shape and appear free of cracks and well maintained over the years. The chair shows light wear from use but remains sturdy. There are two brass brackets on the bottom to lock it in place in the canoe, which can rotate out of the way or be removed.
See pics for better detail on the condition. I'm happy to answer any questions that you may have. The seat measures ~15½” across (i.e. Interior canoe width) and is ~17” deep x ~18” tall. It weighs ~6 lbs on its own (~7 lbs 8 oz carefully wrapped and boxed). Makes a great decorative piece for a lodge or camp, as well as a practical seat for canoeing and camping!
