Great versatile family boat. Extremely stable and easy to handle with kids. Perfect for fishing. I bought this because it is a very stable all rounder. We used it with a small outboard motor most of the time.
It was fantastic for exploring creeks, rivers and bays. The kids are now in high school and want to go tubing so we're getting a bigger and faster boat. I have custom made a few accessories using high grade engineering plastic. The plastic is normally used for high end boat flooring and kids playground equipment. All the additions can be easily removed if desired.
Firstly I made a deflection (splash) plate that is attached to the front of the outboard motor bracket. This limits the amount of water that splashes up from the outboard motor when travelling at speed. I also made an extra seat so the "driver" can sit a little further forward when using an outboard, this added about 25% to the cruising speed. At the bow I added a small bulkhead to create an anchor well. I even tried adding a sail but eventually gave up on the idea.
I used a kayak sail that fitted into an aluminium tube just behind the front seat. A rudder was made from marine ply and attached to a custom made hinge at the back. Sideboards were custom made from marine ply to fit into rails that fit over the outrigger supports. This was all very experimental and designed to be adjustable so I could get the balance right. In the end I gave up on the idea, the sail was too small for the size and weight of the boat.
The sideboards worked but the rails were too flexible. I'll include all the custom made sailing components for free in case you want to experiment. The mast step can be easily removed. The canoe has been well looked after. It has the usual scuffs and scratches you would expect.
The bottom is in very good condition, we usually lifted it onto a trolley rather than dragging it onto the bank. It has always been stored either in a shed, garage or under a tarp so the only UV exposure has been when it was being used. It was stored upside down on supports as recommended by the manufacturer. It comes with several trolleys. There is the Finn Kayak trolley that was purchased with the boat.
I also made a set of wheels that attach to the stern that are used to make it easier to flip the kayak upside down and slide it onto roof racks or a trailer. There is also a much larger cradle trolley with pneumatic tyres that we used when we stayed close enough to the water so we didn't have to put the canoe on and off our box trailer. We just walked the boat the few hundred meters to the water. It works beautifully but don't look too closely at my welding! The outriggers are fantastic.
They slide into tubes and can be completely removed or locked into two positions. The outriggers can be tucked in close for transport or so you can pull up alongside a dock. When they are in the extended position it is impossible to turn the canoe over. They barely touch the water when underway and they give you a lot of confidence when you stand up fishing or get hit by big waves. They also make it much easier for kids to climb back in the boat when playing around without risking a capsize.
There are two paddles as well as two alloy oars with integrated rowlocks that either fit into the outriggers or aluminium tubes if the outriggers aren't fitted. The only non-cosmetic defect I'm aware of is a crack in one of the plastic brackets that attaches the rear seat to the side of the boat. It's not structural or weight bearing and it hasn't changed at all for years. Included in the sale are the canoe, outriggers, outboard bracket, paddles, oars and supports and the Finn trolley. The home made stern wheels, cradle trolley, rudder, sideboards and various mast steps are also included.
I'm not selling the outboard motor or the sail. We used a 3.3 hp 2 stroke and that was more than enough to push us along at about 10kmh and we used about 2 L/hr. You could also add an electric motor, it would be much quieter and there is plenty of room and buoyancy for the batteries. This is a great boat that has given our family a lot of pleasure. It is extremely durable and is easy to maintain.
