2016 Souris River Quetico 17.3 foot 44 lb. Kevlar/Epoxy Canoe, Green Hull Manufactured in 2016, condition is outstanding. Most people would consider this canoe indistinguishable from new. We imported this canoe from Canada--it's the best built, most rugged, most versatile canoe on the market. It is stable enough for fishing, but very fast and handles wind and rough water well.
If you haven't tried a Kevlar canoe, one of the largest advantages is how lightweight it is for lifting to carry on a car roof top while sacrificing nothing in terms of durability. Includes two carbon fiber ultra-lightweight ZRE canoe paddles and two matching wood custom seat backs. List price for this canoe is $3,245, ZRE Carbon paddles list for $200 each, seats for $120 each. Shipping from Canada is $500. Here's the manufacturer’s description:The Quetico 17 has become recognized as the ultimate wilderness tripping canoe.
If you paddle the wild places in Canada and the U.S., you will find dozens of them. These canoes are ultra-light, incredibly tough and very stable. They handle like a dream under any load conditions. When you get caught paddling hard into the face of a headwind, you'll be very glad you're paddling a Quetico 17. It rides high on the waves and takes in very little water over the gunwales, a trait you'll be sure to appreciate if you've ever paddled one of our competitors' "lowrider" designs.Quetico 17 SpecificationsLength - 17' 3"Weight: 44 lbs.
(KEVLAR)Gunwale width - 35"Rocker - 2"Depth:Bow - 20"Centre - 13.5"Stern - 20"Materials and ConstructionAll KEVLAR canoes are not created equal.KEVLAR is a synthetic woven fabric famous for its toughness and durability. It is best known for its applications within the aerospace industry and its bullet-stopping characteristics in police and military protective vests. KEVLAR is surprisingly light-weight compared to fiberglass and several other similar fabrics. What most people don't realize is that the toughness of a canoe made with KEVLAR depends critically on the type of resin used in the hull construction.Virtually all other manufacturers use polyester or vinylester-based resins. Souris River Canoes uses epoxy, by far the strongest of all resins, in all of our canoe hulls.
Epoxy is more expensive, but the real reason so few manufacturers use it is that it is very temperamental and difficult to work with. It requires more time and care to produce an epoxy hull but the result is truly worth the effort. Souris River Canoes builds a KEVLAR/epoxy canoe that, pound for pound, is the toughest KEVLAR canoe on the market today.Flexible Rib SystemSouris River Canoes spent several years experimenting with various ways to stiffen the bottom of our canoe hulls. Conventional wisdom suggested a highly rigid structure as demanded by most elite canoe racers. Under their paddling conditions this was an important feature.
We wisely decided we would not build canoes for racing, but preferred addressing the needs of the canoe tripping and recreational paddling community. As this type of paddling often encounters submerged rocks and logs, a rigid canoe bottom is no longer an advantage, quite the contrary as a matter of fact. A bottom with no give to it tends to crack or puncture when bridged or impacted. The obvious solution to this problem was to construct a hull that had just enough flex to eliminate the above hazards yet still be stiff enough to prevent unwanted flexing under even the most severe wave action one might encounter in flat water paddling. Souris River Canoes has evolved a flexible rib system that has revolutionized the design of wilderness tripping canoes.
To the great surprise of the critics who steadfastly held to their racing design concepts of canoe hull construction, the flexible rib system has been a huge success. The frequency of crack or puncture repair to the bottom of Souris River Canoes is but a fraction of what you will find on the market's rigid bottom designs. Our Flexible Rib System isn't by any means indestructible, but it's about as good as it gets! Woven ColorIf you want color, look at our Woven Color option. This is not paint -- we use colored cloth built right into the canoe.
Souris River Canoes is the only North American canoe builder using Woven Color technology. It doesn't add weight, and you cannot scratch it off.Clear finishWe do not paint or gel coat any of our canoes. Gel coat does add a smooth showroom finish to a canoe. It also adds several pounds without adding any strength. While it does have some abrasion resistance, it is quite brittle.
Look at a gel-coated canoe that is a few years old, and you will find cracks. All our canoes are built with a clear finish. Because we use Epoxy resin, it is strong. Most scratches can be covered by applying a coat of varnish. And, a clear finish highlights our stunning layups.GrommetsWe put grommets at each end of all our canoes.
We think you might want to tie your canoe to a tree when you pull-up on shore. Grommets make it a lot easier to tie the ends of your canoe when car-topping.Heavy-gauge aluminumWe use heavier gauge aluminum than most of our competitors in our gunwales and seat brackets. We know you'll take good care of your canoe. But we know what wilderness tripping is like, and that there will be scrapes along the way.Four-layer layupWe use four full layers of fabric in all of our canoes. Most builders use fewer layers.
One major builder of KEVLAR canoes uses three along the bottom, and only two on the sides. Some even piece together smaller pieces of fabric, leading to delamination down the line. We believe you deserve a strong canoe, so we use four layers, end to end, gunwale to gunwale, every time.Foam-filled flotation tanksOur flotation tanks are filled with foam. You would think all canoe builders would do this, but they often don't. It's not a feature we expect you'll need, as they are also watertight (except for a small breathing hole at the top).
But if you ever do need it, won't you be glad you bought a Souris River? Removable front thwartMost canoes can be paddled solo simply by turning them around and sitting on the bow seat facing the stern. All you have to do is throw your legs over that thwart that is usually in the way. If you find that uncomfortable, buy a Souris River Canoe. All our front thwarts are bolted on, so they can easily be removed.
Just don't lose the hardware - we use quality stainless steel bolts and locknuts. For pick up or delivery in the Maryland, Virginia, District area.
