VAGABOND (2 Day Canoe Building Workshop) Simullar to a Birch bark canoe build. This listing is to build a VAGABOND canoe on one of our canoe building workshop. The Vagabond can be built in 2 or 3 days on any of our canoe building workshops, you are welcome to stay for the full 4 days if you wish. The courses are relaxed and informal, and you work at your own station with full use of our tools and materials. All courses start at 9 am, finish 4 pm and normally all done by midday on the last day and the canoe is yours to take home and paddle.

ABOUT THE VAGABONDThe Vagabond is our latest canoe to be launched (no pun intended), and can be completed in just a handful of hours, over a 2 or 3 day period.
She encompasses the more enjoyable aspects of canoe making developed by the Native American Indians.. a quick look at the birchbark canoe building process will give you an idea of how we make 'um. As such, there is a lot less time spent sawing, sanding and filling, and a lot more time to spend painting and beautifying your canoe. Oh.. And sizewise.. Well, measure your garage and take your pick, but she starts from a minuscule 8 footer and goes up to 16' Hull shape is a 33" wide shallow arch, with bags of tumblehome and a slight rocker. Drop us a line when booking to discuss your options.The canoe can be lifted and carried by one person (just 17 kgs) and is easily transported on the roof of a car. For longevity, you will be using canoe - grade plywood, with ash gunwales, thwarts and seats.
All seams will be reinforced with marine epoxy resin and fibre-glass tape. The canoe allows plenty of space for kit stowage, dogs, kids, picnic hampers etc.. Prior canoe building and woodworking experience not needed. The canoes are designed to be built by complete novices. The stages of construction are very straightforward and progressive and you will be shown in detail exactly 'how to'. Apart from an electric drill, no power tools are used.Staff Steve and Dan have built countless canoes all over the world... take a look at some of our videos on youtube.... Many hands make light work, and as such, you are welcome to bring along friends or family to assist, just let us know beforehand.Completion Yes, you can take your finished canoe home upon completion. Don't forget your roof bars, and either some good quality rope, or roof straps. Look to 'Thule' for good quality straps. Loads of lakes, rivers and tarns for your maiden paddling trip. We also recommend either painting or varnishing your canoe to protect it form the elements.
We can advise you more if or when you book! Food This is a self-catering course, so please bring some daytime snacks. We have tea and coffee a plenty, so no need to bring flasks etc..You will need a mug! Location All our workshops are run the the North Lake District at Great Strickland,a few miles south of Penrith. Just ensure it's at least a foot off the ground, away from the damp.. trestles work well, or you can fabricate a simple frame to stand it on.About us ORCA is run by Steve and Dan and we have been building canoes for the last 15 years.
