For sale a very rare Lakefield Cedar strip canoe, 14 feet long. This is made from very good quality wood from Cedar strips, ribs of rock Elm, an Oak keel and decks of Butter nut and Walnut all held together with hundreds of copper nails and brass screws.I have owned this canoe for about ten years, and previously it was used as a display model at a shop in the lake district for decades. As you can see from the last picture I think this model is a "Lakefield" made at Ontario Canada, some time between 1915 and 1930.I doubt it's been on the water for at least 50 years and is in good solid condition. This has never been restored and so has nopolyurethane, polyester or epoxy resin on it and is ripe for a restoration. This was imported by Salter brothers at Oxford approximatly 100 years ago. They were brought over with three canoe's nested in each other, a 14', a 15' and a 16'. I also own a 15' that I restored some years ago. There is one small patched repair and one end has minor damage were the brass strip has broken. There is one small patch on one of the decks were it's a little soft but overall I think this is in good condition for a 100 year old wooden boat. The inside of the canoe is covered with a layer of very old dark varnish that has shrunk and cracked, but the wood is solid underneath.
On my other canoe I used a heat gun and scraper to remove similar old varnish, and it actually comes off quite easy. The canoe is fitted with the sailing brass ring to support a small mast. There are no paddles with this, just the bare canoe. It is about 28 kg's. This is offered for cash on collection in the South west London. I'm a trusted classifieds boarder with lots of good feedback. This is a genuine sale of a good quality, rare canoe.
