Wenonah Prospector 16 (2010) - RoyalexEquivalent model currently retails at £2,095. The canoe is in great used condition – inside (cockpit) no scratches, near flawless. Externally, the usual scratches and scuffs, mainly below the water line and all as to be expected for a canoe that has seen most use on calm flat water (Thames & Kennet-Avon Canal), with approx 5 whitewater trips over ten years. Freshwater use only. Skid plates have not been applied so the good condition of the canoe can be honestly seen.
The canoe has been lovingly fitted out with laced paracord storage loops beneath the gunwales, D-Ring fittings with inflatable buoyancy bags fore and aft. An ash kneeling thwart has also been fitted for solo paddling whilst still allowing for comfortable tandem /family paddling. Looks great on the water. Supplied with the canoe – aluminium 'spare' paddle, junior Grey Owl beavertail wooden paddle, Original Wenonah kneeling pad – see photos. Anyone who know canoes will testify to the quality of this make and particular model in the original Royalex material which has now been discontinued manufacture in USA.
In fact stories abound of enthusiasts rushing to buy replacements before stocks ran out! As mentioned, the scratches and shallow dents are superficial owing to the inherent robustness of the foam core Royalex, highly revered to be lightweight & strong yet flexible and forgiving. Weighs just under 30kg and with correct technique may be lifted onto shoulders single handed before placing on car roof bars – two people will find it extremely easy to handle. From Manufacturer: The original Prospector was a river running boat known as the workhorse of the north. This proven down river hull is Wenonah's version of that classic design and, maybe, the closest thing to the original that money can buy.
A classic design with gracefully curved ends and sweeping gunwales, the Propspector is a beautiful craft with a tradtional look. Its beautiful lines combine form and function enabling it to traverse both lakes and whitewater with ease. Its rockered hull makes it quick to turn while its shallow arch cross-section and sharp entry lines gives it plenty of glide. Ends flare quickly to shed waves in whitewater or rough lake crossings. Minimal tumblehome makes this canoe rock solid and prdictable when heeled over.
Length - 16'0" Rocker - 2.5" Depth, bow - 25" Depth, centre - 15" Depth, stern - 25" Width, gunwale - 36" Width, waterline - 33" Width, maximum - 37" From Kent Canoes: "A lot of our customers ask me why of all the open canoes available on the market today, I choose to paddle the Wenonah Prospector 16. The answer is simple - it's just such a fantastically good boat. Hull design is a black art, and what Wenonah have done here is manage to make an open canoe which is both highly manoeuvrable and fast at the same time. For me it's the perfect all rounder. It's stable on moving water and responds to edging excellently.
Being 16', it's a really practical boat that can be used for both solo and tandem paddling, with enough space for a kneeling thwart or third seat when catering for younger members of my family. Crucially, being made of Royalex, it is light enough for my wife and me to lift onto the roof of our car with ease. I can thoroughly recommend it." Grant Scamell. BCU Level 5 Coach.
