This auction is for the wooden strips that make a 11-foot canoe, using a stitch-and-glue technique. Photos show a finished boat using strips cut at the same time. I made two sets to strips when I did this project 3 years ago. The completed boat is also for sale at: http://www.classifieds board.com.au/itm/Beautiful-Wooden-Canoe-3-4m-long-17kg-lightweight-Also-available-as-a-kit-/phone9? The strips don't look like much, but they are prcisely cut so that the boat takes shape as the panel are "stitched" together with wire.
Edges are then glued, wire removed, and the whole boat, inside and out, is covered with fiberglass. In this way, this is a fiberglass boat with a wooden core. This makes it very durable, but lighter weight than an all-fiberglass boat. I have built similar style boats from Pygmy. I used the same techniques to build this boat.
Detail here: https://www.pygmyboats.com/kit-construction-process.html Last photo shows scarf joints in the plywood. Look closely for the angled joint. This is the best possible joint -strongest and low-profile. Marine-grade plywood Finished boat: 3.4 meters long (11.1 foot) .7m beam width 17kg -perhaps more or less when you build it. Canoe fits one adult and one child easily.
I have taken it on Sydney Harbour many times. Large waves will spill in but it is safe in the bays. Tallowah Dam is a great paddle. We packed lots of bulky camping gear in this canoe. With a strong paddler, it kept up with sea kayaks on the same trip.
Boat is relatively short, so turns easily. Minimal rocker, so it also tracks straight. Medium beam width makes it stable (kids can jump off the ends), but can be paddled with a double-ended kayak paddle. Seats can be installed, but I just sit on the bottom, using the strap as a back-rest. Small kids can sit on the ends.
Pickup from Neutral Bay (North Sydney). Inspection welcome. Test-paddle is possible (if I still have the completed boat). To complete the kit, you will need: -about 20 hours time -fiberglass fabric and epoxy or polyester resin (about 4 litres) -drill, sandpaper -disposable brushes, rollers, gloves etc. NO woodworking experience is needed (given these are pre-cut panels).
Great father-son/mother/daughter project. I can help, if you live nearby. Henry 0423 298 841
