This is a Kennebec Boat and Canoe Company Type A 18/.5” wood-framed canoe that was built in 1927 in Waterville, Maine. It was obtained by the seller at an estate sale of a local wooden boat collector. Constructed of bent cedar ribs and cedar planks, the canoe is wrapped in canvas that is finished in brown, and seating for two is provided by caned seats. Located in Bangor, Maine, this canoe is now being sold at no reserve on a bill of sale. Kennebec Boat & Canoe Company was founded by George F.
Terry in Waterville, Maine, and was later run by his son George F. Terry Jr. The company was sold in 1939 and eventually closed in 1941.The canoe was restored by North Woods Canoe, Co in 1995. Previously it was on display for 25 years and has never been on the water since the restoration. The exterior canvas was originally finished in red and is now brown.
Scuffs and dings in the canvas are photographed up close. The rub rail (“gunnels”) are fully intact. The canoe measures 18.5 in length. The frame consists of steam-bent cedar ribs and cedar planks, varnished in the interior. The vessel is equipped with three fully intact wooden thwarts in addition to two caned seats.
The stern deck is stamped with the original serial number 19431. This is an 18.5 foot long Maine Guide model. The Maine State Museum and Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) records lay out the canoe’s build history as follows:It was planked by Lantigue on July 9th, 1927. The canvas covering was applied by Roy the same day. He applied the first and second filler coats on July 16th, 1927.It was railed by Mansell on July 30th, 1927.
The original color was red. It shipped on August 2nd, 1927 to location 27-1028. This location is probably an order number but The Maine State Museum and Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) records don't currently have enough information to identify this exact locationDuring ownership by the seller, this canoe has not been operated in water. It has been in storage or on static display at the previous collector's estate.
