Old Town Discovery 169 Canoe Old Town no longer import canoes from America to the UK so these are becoming difficult to get hold of. Grown up kids and my own ageing back mean this is now too big and heavy for just me to handle. Has 2 built in seats but a large canoe with space for 2 adults and 2 kids or dogs etc., loads of space for a family or lots of gear if you want to do overnight trips. Length 16ft 9 inches. Weight ~ 42kg.
Collection only. This canoe had a hole in the front (above the water line and paddled without repair for many trips) when I bought it, photos show repair I did that is still as solid as when done 10 years ago. The canoe has been stored outside in sunlight and this has started to effect the outer layer of plastic. The inside and foam core layer remain unaffected. (See Materials below).
There are a couple of tiny cracks in the bottom of the canoe, one repaired but I ran out of resin. It has been paddled on multi day trips on the River Wye without any problems with these and could last for several years with no issues, but is likely to need future repairs with suitable epoxy type glue. (see recommendation from manufacturer below). From the manufacturer: This canoe does look to have UV damage. There is no way to stop UV cracking unfortunately.
MA300 by Plexus can be used to fill in anything deep enough to fill, but it won't stop more cracking from happening, only fills the current crack. A canoe with UV damage can last a year or 10 more years, it's hard to tell. If you choose to continue to use it, please be sure to check it before each use to ensure there no danger of cracks that have gone through the hull. Once the cracks start penetrating the hull, the integrity of the hull has been compromised and it shouldn't be used. Materials The Old Town Discovery 158 is made from three Layer Polyethylene which has been used to manufacture canoes for decades.
Made up of three layers, an inner layer of close cell foam is sandwiched between two layers of high-density polyethylene ensuring that the canoe has superior strength and durability while still remaining buoyant. The three layer polyethylene provides a lighter, stiffer and stronger build than that of a single layered canoe.
