The Old Town Pack is made of tough, lightweight Royalex®. It's so light that anyone who can paddle solo can carry it; on a portage, to and from the water, on and off the car top.
It's 33 lbs. Of freedom — the Pack goes where other canoes can't." Polyethylene decks with grab handlesWell-suited for double-bladed paddleDurable, yet lightweightBlack vinyl gunwalesWooden, webbed seatSolo use The Old Town Pack is widely known for being a wonderfully light but very durable canoe, being built of the now discontinued Royalex material. It can literally be picked up in one hand and is very easy to portage and load onto a car. We've had this Pack for around a year, and it has been stored outside on a canoe rack in a covered and sheltered position along with my larger prospector. It's been great to use on flat water and has been very helpful for me as a platform from which to develop my paddling strokes and for my daughter, where compactness on urban waterways has been really helpful.
It's a great boat for those who are looking for something very light to use on flat or slow moving water. It is sometimes best used with a double bladed paddle, and I have included a webbed rattan chair which is easily added to the seat. The boat is still in great condition, and has a few scuffs and scratches that are common on older Royalex boats but which are solely aesthetic, and in no way affect the integrity of the hull or its performance. There is one 3-4 inch scratch that is covered with tape and that was there from the previous owner. I was assured that it was superficial and did not penetrate the inner layers of the boat.
I have not found it to pose a problem at all when using it myself. Collection is in south-central Oxford and there is parking outside for loading. These boats don't come up for sale very often. We've had lots of fun with the Pack and will be sorry to see it go, but it's not getting as much use from us anymore and we're making space for another solo boat.
