Old Town Penobscot 17 in Royalex. Pre 2014 boat. Good condition. No cold cracks, has sun oxidation. Cleans up with 303.

It sat under a pine tree and we cleaned off pine tar globs. Hull is splotchy from the resin. Seats are old and still caned. So, those are original seats from that time of manufacture. Labels say LL Bean, who would have originally sold this new.

How it performs and who needs this: I would own this as a young family starting cruises in the boundary waters, or as a lake / river cruiser for any of our shallow rock to mud river bottoms. The Penobscot hulls weigh 75 lbs. A poly Canoe in contemporary Old Town line is 90 lbs. This boat portages easily, has a balanced yoke that makes one handed walking possible. The Penobscot is not a tank.

It is a 33" wide fast lake cruiser. It has cross section curve, which is what you need for choppy lake crossings. That, by design, gives up initial stability, and helps the boat hold a line in chopped up wind driven water. It is fast against inferior 14' and 16' hulls when loaded down. 2 adults, a dog, a week of gear and you have a awesome BWCA cruiser on a budget.

River Basin is an Old Town authorized dealer. This is a canoe we sold to a couple years ago, and they have since retired. It still has lots of life, plus Kevlar skid plates and gear ties have been added. We have brand new old stock royalex canoes starting at $1890, and brand new 2024 Esquif T Formex canoes starting at $2360 for comparison of an apple to an apple. Those are all laminated ABS, same as this classic Penobscot.
