Selling our 12' wood & canvas Old Town Sportboat. It was built in 1942 (see the original build sheet in the attached pictures) and professionally re-canvassed in the original green color 18 years ago (see attached invoice). Its not perfect, but is in very good overall condition, completely seaworthy and ready to take out on the water. There are some shallow scratches on the canvas hull as well as a couple of white paint drips. There is also an approx.
2 square foot area of hull where the epoxy bubbled a little as it cured when the boat was re-covered (see the last picture). I can send additional pics to anyone seriously interested in bidding. The boat only weighs around 100 lbs and is light enough for two people to put on top of a car. Its easy for one person to pull around the yard or at the launch site using either the clamp-on wheels or the tow dolly shown in the pictures. The only non-original feature as far as I know is the mahogany inner stern reinforcement plate that can be seen in the pictures.
I added it to provide additional strength for an outboard motor. A Johnson 2.3 h.p. Outboard is included in the auction. An electric trolling motor (not included) would also work well with this boat. Old Town produced wood/canvas boats and canoes in two grades; as noted in the build sheet, this boat is grade "AA".
According to the Old Town product literature of the period: "In designating A.A. Grade the purchaser assures himself of our very best production. All materials are of the highest order procurable. Planking and ribs are carefully selected, of uniform color, and without any imperfections; gunwales, decks, thwarts, seat frames and seats are of straight-grained, selected mahogany, if available, otherwise selected ash; hang plates of brass and fastenings throughout of copper and brass, - a very few necessary galvanized nails are used in gunwales and stems to hold ribs and planking. Every detail in the matching of woods and finish is accomplished with painstaking care to the end that the completed product will permit of no adverse criticism.
This grade will satisfy the most exacting." Specifications: Length: 12' Width: 47 in. Weight (approx) 98 lbs. In addition to the boat, this auction includes: 2 pairs of oars Oarlocks Clamp-on wheels (lets one person pull the boat- upside down) 2-wheel dolly (lets one person pull the boat- right side up) Johnson 2.3 h.p.
