Exquisite 1938 "Old Town" Canadian canoe. Red Cedar planking on Sitka Spruce bent Timbers, canvassed hull. There has been some work started before I came into ownership of her which mainly involved removing the old varnish on the interior which can be seen from the photos. I am a boat builder of twenty years experience and will say that this boat is in superb shape for her age, it is usual for something as lightly built and as old as she is to be misshapen in some way usually due to bad storage, but "Noonmarks" lines are sweet as the day she was made. There is work to be done on her if she is to be used and it is a requisite that anyone who bids for her will carry out the work in the correct manner.
It is my belief that she is all original but will have to have some woodwork replaced. The two rattan seats certainly need to be replaced as they are made from Ash which has had worm damage. The Ash thwarts are fine though. There is no more worm in the rest of the boat. The name plate reads "Abercrombie & Fitch" I have contacted Old Town and they have provided me with a copy of her build record, when she was laid out, when she was planked, when she was canvassed, first fill, second fill, etc etc... and finally when she left for Abercrombie and Fitch in New York.
Abercrombie and fitch being a big department store at the time. At some point she made her way across the Atlantic (I guess it as a calm day) And has spent most of her life stored inside a barn, thankfully well supported. I would be happy to advise with regards her restoration and would be happy to undertake the restoration also. I would love to keep her for ourselves as she is truly something special but I have other work I need to fund. The price reflects her rarity, condition and providence.
Her number is 119810 As I mentioned I have a document sent from old town with this number build record on it. Collection only or could deliver at cost.
