16 Ft. Peterborough Cedar Strip Canoe

This is a handbuilt Cedar Strip Canoe built form Ted Moore's original issue of Canoecraft. The plans were lofted from the tables in Ted's Book and the canoe built in 2005-6 in my shop. The gunnels, seat frames and thwarts are all made from White Ash. The decks are made from Solid 5/4 African Mahogany with Basswood Inserts, the bow end has a Hand carves Loon and the Stern end a Brown Trout. The seats are woven leather in the pattern popular in Canadian Snow Shoes.

All the wood pices were coated with two coats of West System 105/207 Epoxy prior to assembly. The hull's outside surface has two layers of 6 Oz. Fiberglass cloth burried in 5 coats of West Epoxy 105/207 the interior has a single layer of 6 Oz. Cloth burried in three coats of West 105/207 Epoxy. The hull was built on a strongback and station frames using 1/4 x 7/8 Western Red Cedar Strips joined together wit bead and cove to create the hull shape.

Titebond II was used to connect the cedar strips on the mold frames. The accent stripe on the upper hull is Mahogany and Aspen.
