17' Cedar Strip Guide Canoe

Length 17' Beam 35" Depth amidships 13" weight 66 lbs aprox. I made this canoe two years ago and used it regularly on loch Ken. It is now too big for me to handle on my own as I'm approaching 80 and I am using another self build cottager type canoe of the same construction for solo paddling. The guide canoes were used by the north American shooting and fishing guides to carry their clients into the interior with all the gear necessary for an extended trip. Consequently they are capable of carrying a lot of stuff and stable enough for their inexperienced customers to shoot and fish from.

The construction is monocoque with the beautiful red cedar encapsulated in glass and epoxy resin. Below the water line is coated with carbon/silica and epoxy resin to give protection from sharp gravel and the like when beaching. The seats are hand woven plastic cane on ash frames with ash gunnels, decks and thwart. It is not a light boat and although it will travel on the roof of a car it will definitely need two people to put it on. That being said it can and has been paddled single handed.
