Boat Type: Canoe
Seating: Double
I am selling my hand-built 16 foot (4.88m) cedar strip canoe. I built it from scratch during a long winter in Alaska in 1996. It’s travelled many miles on lakes and rivers here and in the USA. It bears all the patina you would expect from its many travels but is still drop dead gorgeous. There’s one minor repair which was caused while it was in storage.
The cedar strips are totally encased in transparent fibreglass. The gunwales, thwart, fore decks and seats are made from ash and the seats are handwoven. All the additional fittings are brass. There are float sections fore and aft although, given the construction, they are really surplus to requirements. It will take an additional adult or a couple of kids along with the two paddlers.
As I am retiring from canoeing, I will include both paddles, one straight and one bent for extra leverage for the front paddler, and two stands along with a drogue, dry bag, lanyards and throwbag. The stands are made of black walnut and have new canvas straps. You should be aware that the canoe will need to be stored away from direct sunlight. As I said earlier, the cedar strips are encased in fibre glass which will cloud if left outside for a prolonged period. It’s 28 years without ‘clouding’ so remains looking wonderful and will continue to do so if cared for properly.
It weighs around 60 lbs and can easily be lifted onto a roof rack by two adults. I used to do it myself, but that was a while ago! It fits comfortably on the roof rack of my BMW 3 series. If you are interested and happy to draw a crowd whenever you launch, I am asking £1600 and it is available for viewing if you are serious about buying. The attached pictures should tell you all you need to know.
