Skin On Frame West Greenland Kayak. 4.9metre, Wooden Framed.

This is a West Greenland Kayak which I completed about two years ago. It has a wooden frame, the long timbers are in pine and Douglas fir the ribs are steamed ash. It is built to the design published in the book Building the Greenland Kayak, written by Christopher Cunningham, and therefore uses Inuit building techniques in that no metal fasteners are used, the frame is held together with artificial sinew and wooden dowels, the whole lot coated in Danish oil for protection.I wanted mine to look as if it were covered in seal skin, but because seal skin is difficult to obtain in Leicestershire I used a heavy canvas and painted it with bitumastic paint. It is a technique I have used on other canoes and works really well, with the advantage that the skin does not adhere to the frame and can easily be removed if it was decided to update the skin to nylon and epoxy resin. I am selling it because it is a sea kayak, and I live in Leicestershire, I could hardly get further from the sea, so it has hardly been used.
