Traditional Handmade America Indian Style Birch Bark Canoe. 15' Excellent Cond.

In the Great Camps of the Adirondacks and the Northeast, it is relatively common to have old wooden canoes hanging from the rafters, including my great grandfather’s camp. As a boy I marveled at their beauty, craftsmanship, and seaworthiness. My mom gave me a wonderful book, Survival of the Bark Canoe by John McPhee where I was introduced to Henri Vaillancourt, a remarkable master craftsman of birchbark canoes. He makes these canoes painstakingly by hand, starting with finding rare large birch trees and other hardwoods in the forests of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. His technique is what was practiced historically by Indians throughout US and Canada using only birchbark, cedar, spruce root, pine pitch and a few handmade nails.

In 1998, I ordered this from Henri. In 2000, I took delivery. It has been protected indoors and under eaves since I purchased it.My wife and I are moving to a city apartment and do not have anywhere to hang this work of art. I am looking for a home for this heirloom. It has never been in the water though it would make an excellent waterborne canoe.
